CATCHMENT ECOLOGY AND GEOSPATIAL CAPABILITIES
Watershed Systems Ltd. operates a private research development & training facility with a focus on geospatial technologies for integrated resource planning and management of watershed catchments. Called the Center for Catchment Ecology, it operates via a cyberport from the New Zealand high country near Mt Cook.
Geographic Information Systems, (GIS), 3D image base mapping, and tools for remote sensing assessments are some of technologies, products and services available on CD-ROM or via the Internet.
PROGRAM AREAS
Our main RD&T program areas are: (a) mapping and modelling environmental systems; (b) catchment ecology, landscape ecology and watershed management; (c) agroecology and ecoforestry, and (d) resource ecology, and restoration ecology.
Research programs in progress include:
Benchmark Audits of River Catchments: Habitat mapping, land degradation and stream health assessments using remote sensing, environmental telemetry and ecological indicators. This project is based on general systems methodologies for establishing indicators and benchmarks for multiple land use catchment watersheds. Case study areas are in the Billabong Creek Catchment (Australia) and the Waitaki Basin (New Zealand).
Kokanee Terraquaculture Project: Land based, fresh water aquaculture systems bring together salmon farming, waste reuse systems and restoration ecology of high country catchments. Kokanee is the name for land locked sockeye salmon found in Lake Ohau and farmed in the hydro canals in the Waitaki Basin. The customary practice of integrated land and water systems is called terraquaculture.
Geospatial Intelligence Systems: Digital orthophoto imagery provides reliable, up-to-date high resolution mapping for Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Combined with remote sensing and environmental telemetry this project builds on previous work. The objective is to develop geospatial intelligence systems operating in real time with true imagery.
R&D SUPPORT
Watershed Systems provides research facilities, secure R&D sites and practical and applied training, all designed to complement teaching by colleges, institutes and universities. We provide on-site IT support, a range of accommodation options, supervisory management and technical assistance for research and development programs in the high country.
OUTDOOR RECREATION EDUCATION
Learning by doing, while enjoying yourself, is the best way to gain new skills. Our high country facilities are located in the internationally acclaimed Mt Cook region, famous for alpine sports and outdoor recreation. We are able to offer professional guiding and training in climbing, trekking and skiing, cycling, camping, canoeing, fishing and hunting. Photographic safaris are available.
